They are virtually the same... in one case he wants to bruise or batter you... in the other he wants to pull or drag you, but he has to reach his hand into your space either way.
As he punches, slide forward on an angle, strike his face, adhere to it after hit and get head control, throw

As he strikes move outside his arm and block softly, strike face and shin kick

Another version slide outside while blocking, pull his head down into rising knee or thigh kick.

From a grab turn his arm in and then sharply out, reach over as you hold onto the grabbing hand and put him in an armbar.

From a punch, slide in and hit multiple times.

If you can, slide or step off the line of his attack, if not ,strike/kick immediately!

If you can, slide or step off the line of his attack, if not ,strike/kick immediately! In this case that is followed by an arm bar and takedown.

As you move in close use different strikes, when really close use an elbow.

You can combine palm heel strikes with eye gouges and kicks.
