Forward Engagement = Move Forward on an Angle
If you are attacked from Behind, Turn as soon as you can and go Forward.
Bombard him with kicks and strikes!

Forward Engagement = Move Forward on an Angle

As you move forward on an angle slight you should go in as a wedge.

You do not have to bring your hands together (though you might). This shape allows you to move through his space and tends to shed incoming force such as blows diverting them away from your center.

Along with Forward Engagement and becoming a wedge is a corollary principle Two Hand Control.
The Two Hand Control may only be for a split second as you are attacked and counter attack. Watch Pat's Hands (man in black) as he side steps and pushes the attacker's head with both hands.
Watch as Pat simultaneously traps Jim's arm and strikes his face. He has Two Hand Control.
