Bear Hugs from the Front

Bear Hugs

There are quite a few examples in the CORE Books  devoted to various types of defenses against bear hugs.

You might well ask... why devote so much space to this topic?

First of all, because this type of overwhelming smothering attack is the choice of many larger framed attackers, if they donít just grab for you or punch at you.   Especially in sexual assault type of attacks, one of the things the attacker wants is to cause fear and panic in his potential victim.

Second, because it is an attack that may be completely unexpected from someone who you let get to close to you, it is an ambush.  A grab to your wrist or arm, clothing grab, tackle, and a bear hug are the methods of choice for the frontal ambush attack other than simply hitting you.

Third, because the tactics used to defend against these attacks can be generalized to other situations you might be faced with. The techniques that are shown here can be learned in about an hour, so the defenses are not complicated,  Donít take this as permission to get lazy about the need for training. You have to practice them if you want to be able to execute them under the stress of a real attack and not a family demonstration.

As you look through this section, look for common elements.  Does the defender respond quickly?   Are the strikes and kicks familiar to you by now?  Is it clear that one uses the parts of the body not under the control of the attacker to fashion survival and escape techniques?

Face your attacker (turn towards him if attacked from behind), move forward into him when you can, hit A to the Face, and B to the Base, and keep the pressure on him, so you can C Leave the Place making a safe exit from the situation.
